What is the flu? The flu (influenza) is a common respiratory illness that affects millions of Canadians every year. It is caused by germs (virus) that enter the lungs but soon affects the whole body. People with the flu have high fever, chills, sweating, headache, sore throat, dry cough, severe muscle aches, extreme tiredness and weakness. The flu usually lasts for 5-10 days but a full recovery may take up to 6 weeks, making normal activity difficult.

* g- I( Q& M8 a9 H+ p2 MWhy is the flu so serious? The flu spreads easily through coughing and sneezing and unwashed hands. People spread the flu 2 days before they know they are sick and up to 5 days after they become sick. People with the flu tend to catch other infections more easily. Antibiotics do not get rid of viral illnesses like the flu. Some people who get the flu become very ill (i.e. pneumonia, brain swelling, heart failure, worsened breathing). These serious illnesses may lead to hospitalization and even death.0 u+ Y& U$ J" A. L3 p- f6 V0 ]7 ~
How can I protect others and myself? Getting a flu shot every year can help prevent the flu or reduce its severity. Wash your hands often and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.

Who should receive the flu shot? The Public Health Agency of Canada encourages healthy persons aged 2 to 64 years to get the flu shot.; h; Q# E9 S& W/ |

(“Recommended Recipients") for persons in the following categories:
