1 Q$ Q( g' S' I% n) u& kA man died Thursday after his car sped off the road, slammed into a light pole and flipped into a tree.

1 U' D: c: ?$ c6 t$ H( s# d" _  zThe crash happened at the south exit of Whitemud Drive and 159th Street just before 5 p.m.

The impact scattered chunks of the vehicle more than 15 metres and left it crumpled on the side of the road.

. Z- {/ c/ u4 a$ j0 E3 _Emergency workers cut the roof off the car and pulled the driver out. He was later pronounced dead at University Hospital.

; Q7 Z8 E% U) FJoanne Lineken was driving in front of the man just before the crash.

4 X: l: P# w5 u& U! y0 i% H  ~& F"He was coming up so fast, it was incredible," said Lineken, visibly shaken hours after the incident.

2 w; C8 E  e# N" }" h- D: p: N+ _  n"He came up and he kind of touched on my bumper and pushed me ahead. It's like he spun out of control, really quickly went off to the right, went through the light post and spun around and hit the tree."

Lineken, who wasn't hurt in the crash, pulled off and called 911. When she ran back to the car, the driver was slumped over the air bag.

Other witnesses told police the man had been speeding and weaving in and out of traffic erratically before he hit the off-ramp.

! i% p7 L8 c. Z: p. H4 \5 q5 ]% sTraffic Sgt. Bob Manz said it looks like the man was trying to pass Lineken.

"I think what happened was, he was trying to manoeuvre around, and at the speed he was travelling, he couldn't control the vehicle," Manz said.

The man's death was the 10th traffic fatality in Edmonton this year.
