1. aspiring/əˈspaɪər/

If you use aspiring to describe someone who is starting a particular career, you mean that they are trying to become successful in it.

Example: Many aspiring young artists are advised to learn by copying the masters.

2. microcosm/ˈmaɪ krəˌkɒz əm/

A microcosm is a small society, place, or activity which has all the typical features of a much larger one and so seems like a smaller version of it. (FORMAL)

Example: Kitchell says the city was a microcosm of all American culture during the '60s...

3. preoccupation/priˌɒk yəˈpeɪ ʃən, ˌpri ɒk-/

I. N-Count If you have a preoccupation with something or someone, you keep thinking about them because they are important to you.
Example: In his preoccupation with Robyn, Crook had neglected everything.

II. N-Uncount Preoccupation is a state of mind in which you think about something so much that you do not consider other things to be important.
Example: It was hard for him to be aware of her; he kept sinking back into black preoccupation. = obsession

如果是提高阅读能力，或者为了读严肃的论文，做研究，这些词有点用。
如果是日常英语口语，我在加拿大四年多，没有从老外口里听到他们用这些词儿。
第一个词应该认识，是比较重要的核心词汇。
其他两个。。。。
我建议咱们一起从报纸或者某个电视剧台词里抠词儿。

我看太少了，最少十个单词。如果每天只背三个单词，什么时候才能学会英语呀？

你的意见很有建设性，我这几个词的确是从一本学写作的书上挑出来的，因为我正在积累这方面的词汇。如果想找和人日常交流的词汇，的确应当从其他书籍和报纸上摘些下来。不妨你摘生活类的，我摘职业写作的，童鞋们可以两者一起学一起提高，好不好？

学习英语的目的一个是提高会话能力，另一个是换个好工作，增加点面试常用专业词汇如何？咱有个好工作，有了会话能力，这小日子不是很美？

我读书的时候，有位专业老师总是会提到一些英语词，然后评论说，这是一个好词。当时，我就在想，在英语中，哪些算是好词呢？我试着把我觉得的有用的词汇放上来，可能好词在你们心里，有不同的定义。我们就集思广义吧。

可别小看每天3个，日积月累就会有效果。

我们看看是否改用通过每隔一天发一篇短文，大家讨论的形式来提高我们大家的词汇量。
这个短文可以是新闻，可以是任何题材的美文。

english is language. focusing on sentences and articles gives you more chance to review more useful words.

应该多学一些常用的词语。很多单词我们背了可是老外基本上不用。最简单的方法，找不同的老外，拿着一本词典，把他用的词都记下，不用的我们也可以不看。学英语，最主要的，对移民来讲是专业英语，和日常用语，其它的不必强求。谢谢楼主。贵在坚持。

其实在加拿大，听他们用什么样的词儿，也差不多猜的到教育背景了。好明显。

never ever tell yourself how many words you have to learn and how many articles you have to read, focusing on one articles, make sure you understand every word, and can pronounce it properly. then, listen to the material you have read and follow it. record your reading after you think your reading is good enough. listen it then correct it till perfect.
