Why wear a poppy

And held one forth, but I shook my head
$ Y8 o( i% T6 @8 _Then I stopped and watched, to see how shed fare 5 e2 \0 X4 K/ d) U
Her face was old, and lined with care,
/ S. ^) Q+ O$ q; }3 y! v; jYet beneath the scars, the years had made - h5 R7 S  k2 w$ W  i6 _  U% Y
There remained a smile that refused to fade.
' r" y; c0 {8 R9 v: j& L) U: ~1 M6 ^: \0 |$ u2 s
A boy came whistling down the street
( \+ i. g! @+ n, k8 vBounding along on his carefree feet ! c  U6 t( E* q; k
His smile was full of joy and fun
9 D! k# x; m0 M& r “Lady” he said, “can I have one? * U4 p+ D; C' @) e% n# K
As she pinned it on I heard him say
; }/ h) r$ V! u1 S“Why do we wear the poppy today?”
# y+ E! D  X! _  @, @% bThe lady smiled in her wistful way " l" |$ u  q, T$ ]6 ]
And answered “this is remembrance day”
& _+ ?! n8 n/ {! w. A7 P# Z$ T7 p; r# l$ ~5 J, O
“The poppy is the symbol for the, , k6 c) A0 u0 |0 @$ c0 I6 H) X
The gallant men and women who died in the war”.
! E) g" B9 P) w2 Z+ O “And because they did we are free, that’s why we wear the poppy you see” $ W: \9 K. K8 Y

& q7 r0 Y, ~4 R6 U' S" [“I had a boy about your size, with golden hair and big blue eyes, & |4 e; o4 r$ ~) ~$ |) d7 M
He loved to play and jump and shout, free as a bird he would race about”
0 F$ p( h6 I8 `, a6 ZAs the years went by he learnt and grew, and became a man as you will to”,
2 v8 e$ |4 Y( I* b  G" PHe was fine and strong with a boyish smile, 6 |9 C% \9 t1 q: r3 }+ ?
But he seemed to be with us a such a short while ) `* j& H. s! b8 I/ ?7 \/ j2 u
When the War broke out he went away # ~* P4 V: [/ D* f; r
I can still remember his face that day 4 ~3 t1 ]1 ]2 e( S9 l* O
When he smiled at me and said goodbye
8 u* ]+ M: R' K9 W: D/ h: m“I will be back soon, so please don’t cry”
: j- }4 k7 g0 F  c0 ^( f/ C
( E9 U5 d: w' I4 ^, u2 eBut the War went on and he had to stay 4 F0 y9 V; Z1 v0 n- m7 c+ P. B2 u
All I could do was wait and pray & c  r' }* a$ j" z0 \4 E
His letters told of an awful fight , _# d# K% A- C  ]
I can see it still in my dreams at night 1 N* v& \7 }, D" p9 f/ D7 N) `
With the tanks and guns and the cruel barb wire 0 @5 ^( B- {. C
And the mines and bullets, the bombs and the fire ' d6 Z* S6 Y& c! G
Until at last the War was won 2 L7 C& k0 {5 G  \
And that is why we wear the poppy son % p) S$ n- d2 e4 K3 J

5 f: l) {- F" a- U3 R% m0 `The small boy turned as if to go
# v4 Z, I# P  R. I* |0 W: D, gThen stopped and said “Thank you lady, I’m glad I know”
" f7 N. X# ^( e2 v, n+ `) WThat sure did sound like an awful fight
7 A+ Z$ R: E, \& U “But your son, did he come home all right”? " h0 z, u/ @7 ?9 s  r( ?4 f  ?4 J
A tear rolled down each faded cheek, she shook her head
; e2 b. o- F) X0 n* c$ p- S& c4 k8 O$ RBut didn’t speak.5 C. n5 G/ W" G! G: V8 ?

6 K2 n0 c+ I$ B1 n, l  N# Y- a2 jI slunk away, head bowed in shame, 6 ?- ?7 w6 o2 w7 n& I) n7 W
And if you were me, you’d have done the same,
- K7 L* L6 R+ e, C. L5 VFor our thanks in giving is often delayed
9 |. B8 Y7 e# o9 mThough our freedom was bought by the legions who paid. . A+ y# V: }. i" \0 H% V4 y
+ y% t' o+ |  V0 R. U% U
And so, when you see a poppy worn ( Z, ^5 L! W" k" r2 {3 P
Let us reflect on the burden borne
! y9 V; H8 n6 a0 \6 HBy those who gave their precious all
* E1 }! ~! J2 b+ a0 {When asked to answer their countries call
/ K. [2 V8 m: M& O( Q6 kThat we at home, in peace may live
8 I, C+ t7 P6 P; W9 E- j9 oThen wear a poppy, remember, and give.
