# ~1 m6 L1 M6 R/ S/ v1 Y$ BIn 1799 Napoleon’s troops were preparing to defend against the Ottoman Army. They grew closer and closer to the city of Rosetta on Egypt’s West Bank. The soldiers cleared away rocks to create and improve fortifications. A small group of military engineers, led by 28-year-old Lieutenant Bouchard, came across a large polished rock. It had a dark surface and engraved text.
8 F0 e- B+ J" c" y) L) J% S+ F6 qBouchard noticed that there were three separate texts on the rock: hieroglyphs at the top, an unknown text in the middle and Greek at the bottom. The stone’s location inside an Arab fort far from the ancient tombs in Luxor’s Valley of the Kings was a puzzle. The stone sent to Cairo for further research by Napoleon’s famed Commission of Arts and Sciences.
Inspecting the Rosetta Stone
Almost a meter in height with missing pieces at the top and bottom right, the stone was subjected to a thorough cleaning. A group of French scholars found they could read the Greek inscription. It was a note regarding an anniversary. Then they read the last sentence.
