Why wear a poppy

“Please wear a poppy”, the old lady said$ u+ O" N/ E9 {6 c5 v; V
And held one forth, but I shook my head
% q, L$ ~# y4 @8 K! R# n# f( E! l0 \& ?Then I stopped and watched, to see how shed fare 0 A8 R' e. d9 l! k6 \- _6 g
Her face was old, and lined with care, & m8 R$ o( u4 X% `2 h/ ~
Yet beneath the scars, the years had made
  H+ l- {! Q7 s% K( C' a' d+ a: f0 z* CThere remained a smile that refused to fade.
5 j+ z/ V% C. S; Q2 l, ~! K# H' d2 W/ ?# x- Y, j% M9 g7 f
A boy came whistling down the street
% w, |( [5 @7 c) _4 s( K1 bBounding along on his carefree feet 4 z0 x, E: r8 C, Q4 _
His smile was full of joy and fun. e6 y7 O8 B5 ]3 @
“Lady” he said, “can I have one? ; D  v4 ]/ D3 f5 ]3 h( u/ N5 a3 f& ~
As she pinned it on I heard him say & R) l' }: h. i' G+ k& I
“Why do we wear the poppy today?”
/ z% a& K& d; pThe lady smiled in her wistful way   F& h- Y# ]# O+ S
And answered “this is remembrance day”
+ T" k+ F, n/ u  P0 Z: C1 K$ _) K. U# W" z* I  y: r! J/ e  {
“The poppy is the symbol for the, ! Z; x/ e8 r8 [' S; S
The gallant men and women who died in the war”./ ^2 f1 @( u1 ^1 g
“And because they did we are free, that’s why we wear the poppy you see”
# m: J9 X! R! g' q& g
! `$ |  s/ {* f3 V“I had a boy about your size, with golden hair and big blue eyes, ( G$ N/ i* ~  k0 F- c
He loved to play and jump and shout, free as a bird he would race about”
5 F$ D3 C3 k4 h5 |7 }% w7 UAs the years went by he learnt and grew, and became a man as you will to”,
" u' W/ U1 [* q3 g% A  i8 K) GHe was fine and strong with a boyish smile, ' h; k# t$ ~$ L4 w- O8 a5 u
But he seemed to be with us a such a short while 3 \, M: K9 V* y8 w, Y7 }1 ^
When the War broke out he went away 8 H+ s: w: \: g& A# r
I can still remember his face that day " Y+ n7 F2 C7 _
When he smiled at me and said goodbye : \" K1 W) o, @
“I will be back soon, so please don’t cry” 2 M' H: ?  M% i4 x$ h# P

/ n0 X2 s* H, t" F. L: @) i  \But the War went on and he had to stay
) T- a6 z; u) h2 w* J# C; XAll I could do was wait and pray   l6 q6 j0 @# W& z7 n) B
His letters told of an awful fight
$ Y8 s9 y8 c: u* @, v) {4 C" yI can see it still in my dreams at night
- r( J& ]# a0 Q: g2 BWith the tanks and guns and the cruel barb wire
0 p: R$ I1 J8 L7 YAnd the mines and bullets, the bombs and the fire
9 q4 M5 w$ T9 z7 G' Z. |$ eUntil at last the War was won 3 }7 F3 A8 K! s
And that is why we wear the poppy son
+ Z. Q& o) g! Z( S  {
5 C5 k) b$ o% i# pThe small boy turned as if to go
; T1 o) P% Q+ G# E8 Z  x8 XThen stopped and said “Thank you lady, I’m glad I know”
3 D* W+ ]( s0 g  ?7 |+ G/ [# D* {That sure did sound like an awful fight+ I* x; y# }5 X
“But your son, did he come home all right”? - |" A: i& K( t9 {
A tear rolled down each faded cheek, she shook her head . V9 V6 g) G4 o( `4 V+ |* I
But didn’t speak.% x- u7 d. k' ]2 ^! l8 s* M: v

: j" D6 i1 q2 u+ B6 Y. s4 [$ oI slunk away, head bowed in shame, 4 l3 }4 a* P0 B% Z0 Y3 L6 E! z# k
And if you were me, you’d have done the same, + G4 [" a9 i0 @: r
For our thanks in giving is often delayed ; O& e+ G; n# a) E2 A+ a5 c& \
Though our freedom was bought by the legions who paid.
: T. J+ G6 T# n2 a4 ]" U5 J0 ]0 h1 ]8 l# m) _, M) c! C7 x7 w* W) B
And so, when you see a poppy worn . @/ U$ ?$ z" `; L
Let us reflect on the burden borne
: e" e- B2 ^2 dBy those who gave their precious all ( `; @; E; s9 Q4 i; F  d; g1 Q3 J  g
When asked to answer their countries call ; |4 U1 R; q. K5 |1 W$ G
That we at home, in peace may live ! o+ e% X8 Z8 T- m( s* c7 T, G
Then wear a poppy, remember, and give.
