I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
/ N. |% u6 S& p5 n! fam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,) o9 S8 `8 x- `& x
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and& P5 \0 u/ i7 w; g# e
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
; t( E: Y/ ^: Y8 e$ cwill acquire language earlier and faster.
( P' v4 J5 l6 P% \1 Y% D# I, g2 F" N' Q1 \
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
$ D! Y. {& e6 {30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop6 t: ^9 m4 e- [8 k! M/ q8 b- u
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or Z, k h. R# f) `; ?5 i3 u! z
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you; L$ |" _$ j+ K! O3 l- N
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your4 ~9 a, Y0 i% D+ o
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
! K7 \7 u5 A( l5 g# @; U0 }; o% D8 L' b3 c3 K6 e( d
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
. w6 \) m4 U9 h, T5 qbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
7 _9 X" n8 d( E! n! ^. A& Bthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
% x; ^* Y+ |% U7 g) W" d) f0 }1 {4 v9 R# ?8 `& u. ^
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously: R! s0 f. n& H% ?6 z
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
$ _3 D' v* q' F5 \7 V: H+ y, p' j% ?knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to5 @& f( O( C' E, e0 ~* P9 ~
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,0 g* `/ O8 L) _) z3 j& y
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.- i( u9 b* y5 @9 V/ u1 f( ~
# f' {; s; w5 R S* b nThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
- l. D% q3 N$ H7 h* gover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
0 [4 J0 O; K+ G% V0 M+ n$ ?is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will3 v1 c0 k: f- a V" V+ ?& u3 Y
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data% e& i6 V% f& I- Z0 D
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show, f: I2 z0 o+ v4 A% i
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
; `9 T8 q6 z4 |; V2 o9 w; nin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
' N5 B% T1 l3 q) h* }8 Rdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,% c9 g& d8 `9 z
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
( ~0 ]& K% j0 uHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific& L$ p: |8 q8 K, b z
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child: y& O6 d; l- V
